But when Asian women emigrate to the United States, their risk for breast cancer rises over several generations, suggesting something other than genetics was at play. Korde and colleagues checked to see if diet or other lifestyle factors could explain the differences.

A ROADSIDE BOMB BLAST IN AFGHANISTAN

A roadside bomb ripped through a van carrying civilians in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing seven people and wounding nine others, while three Australian soldiers were wounded in another blast in the south, officials said.
The attacks are a reminder of the dangers facing Afghan and foreign troops as thousands of new U.S. troops roll into the country to try to reverse the Taliban gains of the last three years.
They also came a few days before President Barack Obama unveils his plan to tackle the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan, which is battling an Islamic insurgency of its own.
The explosion that killed the civilians happened in Sabari district of the eastern Khost province while the van was on a road also used by foreign and Afghan troops, said Police Chief Abdul Qajum Bakizoy. He blamed Taliban militants for planting the bomb.

The friend added, “Apparently, the reason behind Poonam's suicide attempt is an abortion she had six months ago. We also heard that a few weeks ago, Poonam and Ismail were spotted together at some festival at Varanasi.”
Apparently, the Poonam-Ismail relationship was much more than that of a mentor and student.
“Last year, Poonam had told me that Ismail Darbar had got her a flat in Mumbai and that she is going to shift to Mumbai. She was quite optimistic as she thought she would make it big as a playback singer. She must have eventually realised that she was only being used,” the source informed a news daily.
Ismail Darbar has denied all the rumours doing the rounds. He claims he lost touch with the star-crossed girl six months ago, after the show. CRISP ZUCCHINI

Ingredients:

• 2 Medium zuchini, sliced into 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch thick slices
• 2 Cups cracker crumbs
• 2/4 Cup parmesan cheese
• 2 Large eggs, beaten
• Peanut oil for frying
• 1 tsp Salt
• 1 tsp Paprika
Procedure:

• Heat oil in a pan.
• Add cracker crumbs, parmesan, salt and paprika.
• Beat eggs in a bowl.
• Dip zucchini slices in the beaten egg.
• Then coat it with seasoned crumbs properly.
• Heat oil and fry the slices till golden brown, turning once.
• Drain on paper towels to absorb oil.
• Fried Zucchini is ready to serve.

Nuns in the church are forced to wash clothes and cook meals, a cardinal has claimed.

The candid admissions by Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil, who is also the Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar church, has been made in a book titled, 'Straight from the Heart', released recently.

"There have always been complaints that religious women are used as task force by parish priests. They just bear up the ill treatment, fearing the priests may not say Mass for them or fulfil their spiritual needs if they protested. These things are happening in a number of places," Vithyathail says.

"Religious women very often depend on bishops for land and money to start a convent. They feel they have to deal with priests and bishops with the utmost reverence, almost like slaves.

"A big complaint of our nuns is that the diocesan priests are treating them like servants, making them wash their clothes, prepare their food, wash the churches etc. and that too without getting paid. These are all unjust ways of treating women religious," he says.

Ingredients:

• 250 gms Boneless skinless chicken thighs
• 1 tsp All spice, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom
• 1-1/2 tsp Garlic paste
• 1 -1/2 tsp Ginger paste
• 2 tsp Red chilies powder
• 2 tsp All-purpose flour
• 1 Egg
• 4 Drops food coloring, red
• 2 Cups yoghurt
• 12 Green chilies
• 2 tsp Cornflour
• 3 tsp Lime juice
• Vegetable oil for frying
• Salt to taste
• Onions, for garnishing

Procedure:

• Take a bowl and mix corn flour, all purpose flour, ginger garlic paste, chilli powder, egg,all spice and salt to thick batter.
• Add water if essential.
• Add chicken pieces to the batter and marinate for about one hour.
• Deep fry the marinated chicken pieces till they turn golden.
• Take a sauce pan and heat 4 tsp oil.
• Add fried chicken pieces, slit chillies, yogurt, red color and salt if desired.
• Fry for about 4 to 5 minutes and remove it from the heat.
• Now add lime juice, mix well and garnish it with onions.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday tried to play the whole matter down by saying that he is not in the race to be the Prime Minister.

Speaking to the media here, a cautious sounding Pawar said, “We contest on limited seats and that’s why it’s not possible for us to stake claim for the prime ministerial chair.”

“I don’t want to forget the ground reality”, he quipped.

Police said the Mira Road couple was under the influence of a tantrik, Hasmukh Rathod, 60, who told them in July 2000 that the family would prosper if the father were to have a sexual relationship with his daughter, then 12.

Rathod, a resident of Andheri, was also taken into custody. Locals, including neighbours of the couple, manhandled the tantrik in the police station.

The family (names withheld by the police), which hailed from Gujarat, resides in Phase I of Golden Nest on Mira-Bhayander Road. The businessman owns a unit in Andheri manufacturing radium plates for automobiles. Rathod was known to the couple for more than 20 years. Police said he, too, raped the elder daughter over a period of time, that too in her mother's presence.

In November 2008, Rathod encouraged the man to start a sexual relationship with his younger daughter. Till then, the elder girl had suffered in silence for fear of her father. But when he turned on her sister, she gathered courage and confided in her maternal uncle and grandmother, who complained to the police.

WOMAN OF LASHKAR -E- TAIBA HELD IN J&K

Jammu, March 18: A woman was arrested Wednesday for providing logistic support to militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) outfit in the mountainous Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said.

The woman, identified as 35-year-old Suraiya Begum, a resident of Thathri in Doda district, some 175 km north-east of Jammu, was arrested by the police following a tip off.

Doda's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhat Singh said: "The police got information about this lady harbouring and giving logistic support to militants.

"The police conducted a raid and arrested Begum from whom five mobile SIM cards and some cash was recovered. She used to work for the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant outfit."

THE WORLDS LARGEST BLOOD DONATION

ANANDPUR SAHIB: More than three hundred years after the tenth Sikh Master, Guru Gobind Singh ji, founded the Khalsa amid the hilly terrains of Sri Anandpur Sahib, this holy town once again gift wrapped another great gift to the humanity from the Sikh community -- the world's largest ever blood donation camp.

As long serpentine queues of hundreds of donors on Hola Mohalla continued till late Tuesday night, each one enthusiastic to stress Sikhism's message of universal brotherhood and welfare of all (Sarbat Da Bhala), blood unit count crossed the figure of 20,000 and could well have touched 25,000, shattering the earlier Guinness Book record of 13,000 plus units collected in a single day.

Backed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib and other Sikh temporal seats, and enjoying patronage of more than a hundred Sikh organisations, the blood donation drive broke all barriers of age, gender, caste and economic status as young and old, poor and rich, men and women awaited patiently their turn to make a statement with blood at a time when much of it is being shed across the world in the name of religion.

"It is remarkable that the Sikh community thought of such a grand sweeping idea that not only sends a powerful message but also underlines how at the end of the day human beings are equal. A unit of blood can save the life of a child, an elderly, a low caste or a high caste," said Suzzane Able, an American photographer visiting India as a tourist who had come to the camp to witness history in the making. She was surprised to know that Sikhism does not recognize any caste. "You have told me the best thing about the community. Now I know the real significance of your motto of universal brotherhood," she said.

At a time when rest of India was busy playing Holi with colors or cow dung, the Sikh community was making a statement with this drive. 25,000 units of blood in flat 24 hours was the target, and the organizers, led from the front by Akal Purakh Ki Fauj outfit, had made sure that all mandatory requirements of the administrators of Guinness Records are fulfilled and cameras keep a record of all donors, quality checks are stringent, medical care at its best and safe blood keeping practices are followed.

With this blood donation drive, the Sikhs beat the Sirsa dera's earlier effort to collect 13,000 plus units on one day.

The sheer scale of logistics was mind boggling as the camp spilled over on to two lakh square feet of makeshift tents, 700 beds divided in 14 blocks of 50 beds each, and averaging 2,500 donations in one hour. All this effort was possible, thanks to an army of 8,000 volunteers, 3000 paramedical staff and 100 doctors deployed for the camp. Army personnel from Jalandhar and Chandi Mandir were among the teams collecting units.

Kiranjit Kaur had not heard of the camp and had come visiting the Takht Sahib with her parents. "I never attend the political rallies that happen at the sidelines but I was mesmerized by the idea of the camp. Me and my sister insisted about donating blood and our parents finally agreed to stay over for the night. We have waited for six hours and hopefully our turn will come," she said.

Baljinder Singh Maur said the camp has inspired him to become Amritdhari. "May be it needed this camp to bring me the Guru's blessings," he said.

The Holla Mohalla festival attracts lakhs of pilgrims from all over Punjab and the rest of the country and is the festival of truth, courage, bravery and service. The milling crowds of Sikhs who came to know of the camp added largely to the success of the effort, monitored for Guinness record purposes.

Sikh enthusiasts had come from, thanks to the massive mobilization campaign to ply blood donors, as far as Maharashtra, UP, Uttarkhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana.

Punjab High Court grants regular bail to Dera chief Gurmeet Ram

Chandigarh, March 06: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted regular bail to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in connection with a case registered against him relating to hurting religious sentiments of the Sikhs by attiring himself as Guru Gobind Singh.

The sect chief had earlier been granted interim anticipatory bail pertaining to the case registered

The Punjab government submitted before the High Court today that Ram Rahim Singh was no longer required for further investigations in the case.

The case against him related to offending religious sentiments of the Sikhs by wearing a dress similar to 10th Guru Gobind Singh.

The Dera chief had been questioned several times by the police regarding the controversial dress worn by him.

Punjab and several other places in the country were on the boil in May 2007 after the Sikhs violently protested against the sect chief allegedly dressing himself as Guru Gobind Singh.
